Becoming Free of Opioids: The Recovery Journey and Peer Support

Over the past quarter century, we have learned that people who have substance use disorders may face a recovery journey that can last a lifetime. During this journey, the person in recovery needs strong social supports that include a peer, who also has undertaken the same journey (Birtel, Wood, & Kempa, 2017). Peer based recovery support is the “process of giving and receiving nonprofessional, nonclinical assistance to achieve long-term recovery from substance use disorders”(Bassuk, Hanson, Greene, Richard, & Laudet, 2016). Such support from a peer and the community can facilitate treatment and rehabilitation services.

This webinar will describe the key steps in the recovery journey and the essential features of support by a peer who has taken similar steps. It will be based upon a first person account.

All online evaluations must be submitted six (6) weeks from the date of the activity to receive continuing education credit.
